Thursday
So. The day after we went to the beach we went to the etruscian tombs. The etruscains were a pre-Roman people who were probably descended from the vollanovas. They had a very positive persception of the afterlife so they painted the pleasures of life on the walls of their tombs. There were dolphins and birds and feasts portrayed. We haven't been able to decipher their language yet, but we have a golden book written by them. The tombs reminded me of hobbitville because they went down into the hills an they hills were so grassy and flowery.
After the tombs we went to an ancient Roman port city. I loved the mosaics. This trio has made me develop a love for tile, particularly marble tile floor but tile mosaics as well. I love it. The ruins were amazing. There was a restruat type buildig and it was so well preserved. They were really interesting to learn about.
We flew to Madrid later in the evening and didn't arrive at our hotel till midnight.
Friday
Yesterday we went to the castle Escorial. I, of course, got terribly lOst. I have a bad tendency for that. There was a lot of beautiful art work and many of the religious scenes were stories that I haven't seen painted very often, such as the story of Sampson. I walked through the crypt part all by myself when I was lost and it freaked me out. What if the day of the dead or the resurrection happens while I'm by myself surrounded by dead people? Ew. Creepy. Anyway. I found peoPle while I was sitting in the basilica and went with them to the gardens. They were breathe taking. They were right on the edge of the mountain and you could see for miles. The gardens were beautifully sculpted and the pools had swans. It was so so pretty.
We then went to Segovia. It's a small Spanish (tourist) town. It has a Roman aqueduct which was really cool. We didn't know what to do their because the professors just sort of kicked us out of the bus and told us not to bother them if we happened to encounter them. So B. and I walked abound looking for food and trying to be positive even when everyone else was being a grouch. We climbed the aqueduct and found a while other city. We were a little disappointed. Because we hadn't know that part existed and had purchased food at the bottom that was more expensive than that on the top. we had fun wandering the streets. Some of the buildings had really pretty textured walls. We happened to run into a
Massive cathedral that kind of reminded me of those models kids make in grade school. It was all wooden and had cool ornate designs on the spires. We kept seeing a palace on postcards but had no idea where it was. (Later we saw a map and realized it'd we had kept
Walking up we would have hit it eventually) then we meandered into an outlook atea. We were on top of a hill and saw every thing for miles. The town ended quickly and the rest was beautiful fields and hills. we had fountain water there too and it was delicious.
We went back to the hotel Finally and went to buy candy from the store. Me and B ate a whole bag of Haribo candy while listening to B.P. Talking and giggling. It was fun. We've eaten so much Hatibo candy this trip. It's a little out of control.
Today, we are off to Toledo and then off to the Reina Sofia museum.

Mediterranean

Wednesday, May 11, 2011

Today was a free day till 2:30. We walked abound. We walked along the river to the church with the statue head that you put your hand in that is in Roman Holiday. I put my hand in his mouth. I don't remember what it's called in Italian but the translation is the mouth of truth.
Then we walked to the old chariot race field. It's massive. A teacher and D. raced part of it.
Then we walked to a church that has catacba. We walked through the church and down some stairs to the catacombs beneath. They were early Christian catacombs. It was really cool. Kind of creepy. There were some monks or priests chanting and we weren't really sure why. We thought maybe a funeral.
Then we descended deeper. Underneath the catacombs there was a roman house. It still had a running spring water fixture. That was seriously cool. There was also an old Mithras cult alter. It's the cult with a bull. They also perched of resurrection, but were very secretive.
Last we visited a large church. It was very pretty and ornate. It seemed as big as St Peters. It had a Moses statue with horns.
After that we took the metro to a closer spot to home to walk back. We got McDonalds. Yep.
Then we drove out to the coast. It only took a few minutes. It's really pretty but reminds me a lot of home. I don't have a swimsuit but I put my feet in the water and it was freezing. I stayed on the sand.
Yesterday we went to the Vativan. We got up early to beat the line. We went through the walls into the city and it was really neat. We first saw this column base that showed both Greek and roman style reliefs. Than we saw early Christian sarcophagi. They had the old Christian symbol, the X with the elongated P running through it and the alpha and omega signs on either side. I like the symbol.
When we saw a lot of roman and Greek sculptures. I really like sculptures. One of my favorites was the personification of the Rober Nile.
Then we went to see Rafael's works. The Fire of Borgo and the Dcholors of Athens.
We walked through the modern art exhibit fto get to the Sistine chapel. It's so beautiful. Smaller than I expected theoigh. Then we hiked the dome of St Peters. That was a struggle. We made it and I sent a postcard at the top. Then we went in St Peters. So amazing! So ornate and gold. It's crazy. Michelangelo's pieta is really cool. Burnini's alter thing is so beautiful. I really liked that. We walked around Rome after that and then later that night we a tually went to see Rome lit up. We saw the runes and the coliseum. So so so crazy pretty. We also saw some bats and ate some more gelato.
That's been my last few days.

Take it to the Street

Monday, May 9, 2011

Yesterday wasn't very interesting. We went to church in Florence which was forever long because they had a guy translate at the pulpit. Very long. After that we went to some town on a hill and saw a striped church which was neat.
We drove into Rome and it is cool. We are staying in a convent and the sisters are so kind and so amazing. Our rooms are so comfortable and the sister try to teach me Italian! Which I love. We went around our neighborhood and saw so many cool street performers. There was the spray painters and acrobats and magicians and bubbles! I love bubbles. There were si many stands and cute things. We went and got gelato and I had some street pizza with arugala, mozzarella, and tomatoes. So good and so cheap. It was so fun.
Today we took a walking tour of Rome. It was windy. I have a passionate hate against wind. Especially cold wind. So I don't really remember much about today because I kind of zone out to avoid thinking about the wind. I know we saw the coliseum and the pantheon. We also saw Michelangelo's Moses. I really liked that. We saw the Trevy Fountain. I don't know how to spell it. I threw a coin in and made a wish. We ate a delicious dinner. We had real pizza cooked forno style. It's thin like a cracker and amazing. We got sausage, extra cheese, and mushroom. Mmmm. We saw carvaggio's the Ecstasy of St. Teresa. She's not my favorite saint but the sculpture is pretty. We also saw Carvaggio's painting of the ordination of Matthew. That is a seriously pretty painting. I can't think of what else we saw... Were going out again tonight to see the Coliseum lit up. That'll be fun.

Florence

Saturday, May 7, 2011

Today was a busy day.  First we woke up early and went to the Duomo which is massive.  I thought it was going to take forever to hike up the stairs to the top, but it wasn't any worse than Notre Dame.  That was amazing to see.  It was really cool to walk between the layers of the dome and see the curve from the inside.
After that we went to see the Pieta by Michelangelo.  It is his unfinished piece and is really beautfil.  I just really love sculptures.
We went to the market after that and I proabably had a little oo much fun.  I got some ties, two silk scarves, a strawhat, and envelopes.  Enevlopes are a weakness of mine.  A lot of people in my group spent a lot of euros on leather items, such as jackets or purses.  I was thinking about a ta leather trench or a purple purse, but both were €200.  Sooo not worth it.
We went to another museum after that and saw the Birth of Venus and the Primavera by Botteccilli.  They are really amazing.
We visited two churches briefly and i still love churches. In one of the churches, (the one connected to the Duomo) they had these beautfil candle set up.  They looked kind of like flickering trees.  They put the short tea candles on this ire tree looking thing and underneth them.  It was so cool.
We have some sort of guitar show tonight? I don't know what thats about.  I'll endure.  I'm really tired though because the window let the light in and there was a massve night light in our room last night.  It was not fun.  There are also 16 girls in that room.  On the plus side I got to shower today since I came home a little earlier than others!

Italia

Friday, May 6, 2011

Today we left Austria. We crossed though the beautiful mountains into Italy. We made one stop along the way to this beautiful chapel. It displays some transitionary art from medieval to Renaissance. The art covers the walls and ceiling of the chapel. It was done by artist giotto. It was amazing. He used lupis lazul which is a stone and very expensive. It would have cost less to gild the chapel than it did to make that paint. We could only spend 15inutes in the chapel before it needed to be destabilized.
After that B. and I wandered through the streets of Padova. (Daddy you will be glad to know that my directional skills have improved drastically since the time I got lost all the way in the getto. I'm actually really good at it.) we sat by a river and tanned. We got lunch and two servings of gelato for under €5! It was cool. We also had this drink called Lemon Soda. It's so good. A really strong lemon flavor. It's suprisingly good though.
We set off late because 6 girls got lost and took over 40 minutes to finally find the bus.
We comtinued to drive and finally reached Florence. Here, they call it Firenze. It's really cool here. Bridges and beautiful
Buildings. I use the word beautiful a lot but it's true! Everything is very aesthetically pleasing haha. We went to the Acedmia which is a museum and we saw Michelangelo's David. He is massive. It's so interesting that his head and his hands are disproportionally large. He is beautiful sculpted. Everything is prefect. There were a lot of medieval art in there as we'll. Whvh is pretty, just in a different way. Very interesting. After that we took a brisk hike across the city to this restaurant. It was soooo good. I over ate. After that we went and got gelato again! It was so good! I got marscapone swirled with nutella. It's called Santa T-serving. It was really good. Even my lactose intolerant friend could have some of the Albert. It was over all a good plan.
Right now were doing laundry. There's only one tiny washer, so it's a bit hard. But we will prevail! Tommorrow is mostly a free day. We are going to hike to the top of the Duoma! IRS been hot here so I also plan on wearing a skirt tomorrow.
Fun fun fun!

Bus Day

Thursday, May 5, 2011

Today was a bus day.  Mostly.  We left Vienna and drove for a very long time.  We stopped along the way to see this Medieval castle.  I can't remember the name of it because 1) I don't think they told us or 2) it was really long.  Something German though.  I feel like I deserve a "I made it to the top of the mountain" shirt after climbing all the way to that fortress.  It was insane.  No one told me we'd be hiking, so my shoes were not ideal.  Adorable, but not made for hiking.  Anyway.  Once we made it to the top we took a tour.  It was much different than I expected.  The inside had all pretty much been remodled so it didn't look like a drafty castle.  More like a museum.  The gift shop had wooden swords and cool mace things and I wanted to get them for some of my younger brothers but I didn't bring my purse with me.  My mom is probably thanking the heavens after reading that.
We continued our drive through the pretty Austrian country.  It's so green! So filled with trees and hills.  Its honestly like a scene out of The Sound of Music.  We finally reached Velden and it is amazing.  Our hostel is right on this massive lake and surrounded by tree covered hills.  So beautiful.  Some of my friends jumped in the lake.  We are calling it the Polar Bear Plunge in Austria.  Hmm everything sounds better with alliteration, but i can't think of a good one for that.  That's beside the point.  While driving I also got pretty far into the second book of the Lord of the Rings series.  Prettz stoked about that.  There are some Dennmark kids running amuk and its really distracting.  They're highschool age or younger.
We drive to Florence.  We leave at the God-forsaken time of too-early-in-the-morning.  I shall be up before the sun.

Last Day in the City of Music

Wednesday, May 4, 2011

Today was our totally free day. We weren't sure what we were going to do when we came home last night. Luckily we made a great plan. I'm into maps so I drew all over mine and wrote our plan down. We woke up and left by 9:30 this morning. We took a streetcar all the way to the Central Cemetary to visit the graves of the diseased composers. Mozart has a monument there as well, even though he technically isn't buried there. It was very cool. We also walked over to the Jewish section of the cemetery. That made me kind of sad. They have no posterity to take care of their plots, so they are thickly overgrown or are broken. Many were even pushe over or purposefully broken after one of Hitler's speaches. It was rather sad and so quiet.
After that we went to Karlscirche or whatever. Charles' Church. We climbed up all this scaffolding to the top of the dome. It was kind of scary. It was so rickety and high! But the dome was amazing to see up close. It's a baroque style church so the art is beautiful and very decorative.
We went to a palace after that. We couldn't go in because it was so expensive.
Then we went all the way back to the ice cream place from the first night. It's so good and creamy and has delicious flavors. M. and I got some while everyone else went home. I got hazelnut, vanilla, and chocolate. The place is called Tichy but is pronounced teeky.
After that we went to an opera. They have standing tickets for only €4. So we though it would he cool. The opera was Don Giovani by Mozaert. I loved it but my feet were killing me so I left at intermission. I have terrible feet. No matter what shoes o wear I'm in pain.
Anyway. Tomorrow we drive out to Velden then on to Florence. I'm so excited for Italy!

Catch Up

Tuesday, May 3, 2011

Its been awhile since I've written on this.  Currently, I'm sitting in a hotel in Vienna, Austria.  Their keboard is a little strange so if I seem to be making an abnormal amound of odd typing errors that's why.  For instance, their z and y are switched on this kezboard.  It's confusing.  I arrived in Vienna yesterday.  It is a beautiful city.  There is this road that encircles the city that used to be the wall that surrounded the city and it is really neat.  One of my leaders, Brother A., served his mission in Vienna so he knows a lot about this area and he speaks German.  I've been trying to ask people in every country I go to how to say things in their language.  I think it's really fun and a language is such a basic part of anz culture.
Today I had brotwurst.  It was awful.  I think that I have eaten more meat in the last few days than I have in the last month.  It is so gross.  The dinner I had last night was pretty good though.  It was pounded pork (?) with baby potatos in herbs and a soup (their word is zupa).
We walked through this market today and it was so neat.  It was a market of all sorts of things.  Restaurants, vegtables, fruit, SPICES (!), clothing, meat, etc.  I honestly love the spice section.  It was just a whole row of stalls filled with fresh spices! I think I'm in love.  We also took a walking tour of Vienna earlier.  It was so cool to see the churches.
Okay.  Now I am going o backtrack a little.  Back to England.  We first took a ferri (which was almost like a cruise).  Then when we got to England we went to Salisbury.  We had a rather tramatic morning. Food didn't go well for anyone and everyone was running late.  The church was beautiful though.  Almost every church I've been in I light a candle in respect of the church and the people's love for God that it represents.  I love churches.  They are so wonderful.  In Salisbury they also have a copy of the Magna Carta, which we saw.  That day was also the day of the Royal Wedding.  We got to see a part of it when B. and I were shopping in a store.  We had a great conversation with the man in there about it.
After Salisbury, we went to London.  After dropping our bags off at the hotel we went to Piccadilly Square, which is like their Times Square.  I loved it! So many people.  Everyone was celebrating in the streets for the royal wedding that day, but every day we went after that was still very crowded and bustling.  I thought it was so fun.  Some of us who didn't have a musical that night went shopping.  The next day we went to a few museums and then to Portabello Road.  I thought that was so cool!  It was a massive street fair.  Mostly antique stuff.  The people I was with grew tired of it quickly so we left and went shopping again.  We went to this little hole in the wall cafe while we were on Portabello and it was so good.  That night I attended Les Miserables.  It wasn't my favorite and I've never been so high up for a musical in my life.  It was a cool building though.
The last day in London we went to church and then tagged along with one of our favorite teachers, Brother W.  He took us to see some of the touristy things and to teach us how to eat for cheap since we'd been struggling (grocery stores.  its brilliant). We saw the changing of the guards which is so long!  I didn't think it would be such a long process.  They played Star Wars and Indiana Jones during it which we all thought was funny.  We walked around the corner to Big Ben and the Eye and took pictures.  I must confess I haven't been the most faithful photographer.  My camera is either dead or I feel weird taking pictures (like in a church).  Mostly its dead though.  I found someone with a charger for my other camera so that's charging right now and hopefully I'll improve.  After we saw all that we went to St. Paul's Cathedral.  B. and I weren't going to since my feet were killing me and she was tired, but Brother W. said it was really worth a see.  So we went.  We got there in time to attend a service.  It was so cool.  There was insence and prayer and preaching all in this fabulously beautfil baroque style church.  It was awesome.  He used a new translation of the Bible, which sounded odd to me at first.  It was really nice to see how other people worship.  I shook the priest/bishop's hand and he seemed like such a sweet man.  I really like seeing other people that are so dedicated to their love for God.
Back to Vienna.  I have no clue what we are going to do all day tomorrow.  None of the teachers have any intention to see us at all tomorrow, but none of us know what to do.  We couldn't even fill up the free afternoon thez gave us today.
Okay I'll try to write at least once more before I leave Vienna since I seem to have a reliable source of internet.  Still no pictures.  Mobile Me isnät letting me steal them off.  Oh well.
